The rigid foam core panels are made by combining various components using a foam machine. Polyol and Isocyanate are the 2 major components used in manufacturing PU and PIR foam.

There are 2 types of Polyol that are used for manufacturing these insulating core materials- Polyester Polyol and polyethylene glycol. PIR foam is created by combining Isocyanate and Polyethylene Glycol whereas PU foam is made by mixing Isocyanurate and Polyester Polyol.

One of the striking features that differentiate PU and PIR sandwich panels is fire-resistance capabilities.

Both PU and PIR sandwich panels are fire-rated sandwich panels, as they have the capacity to stop the spread of fire. But PIR has greater fire-resistance capabilities, making it one of the most demanded sandwich panels in Saudi Arabia.

Polyurethane sandwich panels are known as B-3 Fire retardants and are used for covering roofs. It has limited fire resisting capabilities as compared to the PIR foam. It can restrict only 20% to 30% of heat. Sandwich panels are produced using Class ‘B’ fire ratings and it can be classified as follows:

• Class B1- Low flammability
• Class B2- Normal Flammability
• Class B3- High flammability

PIR is known as B2 fire-rated sandwich panels and can defend against fire for almost 2 hours. Moreover, unlike PU panels which can only stop the fire from spreading for 1 hour, PIR roof panels burn itself and does not cause any spread of fire to the surrounding areas. Therefore, these panels are safer for residential purposes. Polyisocyanurate foam has the following characteristics- brilliant fire performance, and reduced combustibility.
